Is the Google Pixel 4a an upgrade or a budget version?

I don't understand the "a" part in the model numbers. Is that like a slightly newer version (sort of like a face lift) or is it like a lite version/slightly less features?

I noticed on the specs that the Google Pixel 4a will have a slightly bigger battery but then it has an inferior SoC. This just makes me confused as to what is the point behind the a.

It's Google's budget model. They started the budget Pixel line last year with the 3a. They are great phones if you are OK with the lower level specs.

Or the Moto G series. Might not have all the "bells & whistles" but they are a really good phone for a really great price.

Budget or more like mid range. But plastic vs glass, and the regular pixel 3's are water/dust resistant. 3a camera also doesn't have google visual core for photos. 3 Xl also had a larger screen than the 3a XL.

They made it more affordable by taking out wireless charging, water resistant, top. Of the line chip, display, etc..
