Is the HTC 10 priced too high?

That's weird. I thought it was there as a carrier branded version.

(I live by 3 words. fastboot flashing unlock)

Looks like only Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint will be getting carrier-branded models:

In the U.S., HTC 10 will be available across multiple wireless providers including*Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T–Mobile, which will announce colors, availability and pricing. In addition, HTC will be offering an Unlocked edition on*www.HTC.com, which will be compatible with AT&T and T–Mobile networks and will be available for pre–orders beginning today, April 12, with shipping in early May.

if the phone is as great as we think it might be, they will. They want to make money. The unlocked versions only work on AT&T AND T Mobile...They will sell it if it's what people want., Help make that happen, if you like the phone and like HTC....
I'd recommend getting the unlocked version if you have AT&T. You won't get any carrier bloatware, and you'll also be able to use T-Mobile or AT&T/T-Mobile MVNOs if you wish to do so.

It's priced way too high. Sure, it looks like a nice phone, but HTC isn't doing so well and pricing the phone at $700 isn't going to win them any new customers. If I was an average customer out to buy a phone, I'd get a Samsung device for that price just for the brand recognition alone.

I think the price is right on target and that Samsung is too high for the edge.

The more I see this price, and the discounts and promos getting thrown around, I think it is HTC playing bookkeeping tricks. They are handing out $100 discounts like candy at Halloween at this point... only conclusion that I come to is that by doing so, HTC can write down the $700 sale in revenue, then move that $100 off to another line item somewhere (like promotional marketing)... So when they have shareholders meetings, they can boast about the profit margin.

So they sell the phone at $599, which is a much better price for the phone, but claim they made $699 on it.

Do you have a background in accounting?

The $100 wouldn't be booked as a marketing expense but as a sales discounts which would immediately impact their profit margin. It wouldn't be booked as an operating expense. So I don't understand why you think they are performing accounting jujitsu.....

The reason they are offering the sales discount is that they are willing to take $100 to their margin in order to boost demand. This is purely an elasticity play.

Plus, In order to get the discount, a customer needs to buy it from HTC, not their carrier. How many people will "miss" this and order from the carrier and not get the $100 discount (unless the carrier matches it or lowers the price)?

Sales Discounts, Rebates, prompt payment discounts all effect profit margins.

They are probably still making more money selling it through HTC website with the discount than they are selling it to carriers.

Okay for one most carriers do not sell the phone unlocked , unlocked phones tends to be higher than carrier phones, next use the GS7 as a guide each carrier sells it for a different retail cost some high some low so either way folks buying the unlocked get a 100.00 because you tend to pay more for that no bloat first to get updates and what not. folks most likely when its available through the carrier are going to get the phone at a way cheaper starting price and most likely get some carrier offer to hook people in like fishing in a pond. Here is a future add just for fun.. Get the HTC 10 from t-mobile for 549.00 plus free 32GB micro SD card, and 100.00 account credit so in the end you get the phone for less than what folks paid unlocked thats how carriers hook line and sink folks.

Re: Priced too high?

I am done with paying stupid prices for a cell phone that is only new for 9 months I don't know how you guys afford it but I can think of a of things I can do rather than waste money like that I have the lg G4 and will wait until next year when I can get the G5 for half the price.

9 months? These things are only on top for 3-4 months until the next one comes out.

I think carriers do a pretty good job of creating the perception of an "affordable device." I'm on my last $500+ flagship device with the S6 active and realize that it was too expensive for me to begin with. I understand that companies want their profits, and carriers want their agreements/installment plans, but alot of the mid-range devices are more than adequate to be daily drivers.

I realize that this was my own decision to jump into a Next plan for a $694.00 device, but in hindsight, I won't do it again. I'd much rather spend around $350-$400 for a phone and put some of the savings towards an insurance plan.

The HTC 10 is very nice, and I suppose a $699 price is appropriate for the competition. If HTC wanted to make a bunch of noise, $400 would have been the way to go.

If the HTC 10 is any indication of what this year's Nexus will be, I'd seriously consider it for $350-$450.

And for people comparing the Nexus 6P with the HTC 10, what is the real price difference? In Germany the Nexus 6P (32GB) costs 649€. The HTC 10 costs 699€ and the iPhone 6S costs 745€ (16GB). I cannot say about the US, but in Germany I do not see how the HTC is priced very high. The Nexus 6P doesn't even have earbuds included. The HTC 10 has high res earbuds that are said to cost around 100€. Even if they cost 50 Euro, you can see that there is no price difference to the Nexus 6P (in Germany).
Add to that the better and more premium quality...

Regular price for the 64GB Nexus 6p in the USA is $550, but occasionally it goes on sale for $475. Just recently it was that price at Best Buy and B&H photo, that's for brand new and not for refurb. You can find them locally on craigslist for even less.

Of course. Brand perception.

Mercedes-Benz has always been perceived as a prestige brand. Infiniti, while they make pretty good luxury cars too, is perceived in a less-highly manner compared to Mercedes-Benz.

That's the situation HTC is facing. They make great stuff. It's their brand-perception that needs work in order to convince consumers. That's where marketing comes in.

That's really not a fair analogy, Infiniti may not have the same cache as a Mercedes but it is not bleeding money and on the road to bankruptcy.

The price of these flagship phones is getting ridiculous . As long a people keep buying these over priced phones they will keep gouging.

Yeah... my 6P got purchased on a similar sale back in December... I basically got my 64GB 6P with Nexus Protect, shipped, for less than what T-Mobile lists the S7.

Of course they are all expensive, starting with the over-hyped and way over-rated iphone. That's why they are all now offering payment plans and leasing options. Customers should just stop paying these ridiculous prices, that would put pressure on these guys to lower their prices and I mean all of them Apple, Samsung, Sony etc.. But everyone wants a shiny new toy every year or every other year and as long as you can just kep making monthly payments nothing will change. If people had to pay full retail at time of purchase, most would opt for less expensive mid range phones.

Yep, I'll wait for 9 months then pick it up on a plan for 99 dollars, even if it isn't the best phone then itll still be better than my htc m8😜.
