Is the nexus 4 old already?

The thing to remember is the Nexus phones in the OEM phones are on different launch schedules. when the Nexus 4 came out it was far ahead of all the dual core phones released in the spring where is the Nexus phones released in the fall. Also Android is reaching the point where the hardware is actually getting ahead of what's needed for the OS. I think we're going to start seeing future phones differentiating themselves with software and features rather than hardware specs

The Nexus 4 is old by mobile standards, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better phone at that price.

Exactly. There are a few state of the art phones that are better but you can't even buy a used unlocked SG3 or HTC One X for less than a new N4.

followup question: if all android Phones can be rooted and People use custom roms etc. even People With nexus Devices which already provides Stock android, why do People want the nexus Devices if you end up rooting it and installing like paranoid android or somthing.... couldnt you do the same to any android phone and get the same result? or does it work better because of Stock android on the nexus?

Those with N4's usually root because they can, or to allow specific applications like Titanium backup. I rooted my previous phones so I could load custom roms. These freed me from carrier bloat and slow carrier updates. No need for me to do this with the N4.

The only thing that seems relevant to this question is that none of the devices come close to fully utilizing their processing potential. All of the extra RAM and CPU speed are useless except in the most hardware taxing games, but most apps don't use 1/20th of the hardware potential. The Nexus 4 was the best device available last October; right now I'd say it's in a 2 way tie until May 15th or so, at which time with KLP it'll be the best again.

I would say it is old, but not a bad phone. The LG Optimus G (on which the Nexus 4 is based) was launched in August 2012, which was 8 months ago. Its based on last year's chips and screen tech. So, its not a bad phone, but it isn't as good as this year's flagship phones. If your current phone is dead and you need a new one today, the Nexus 4 isn't a bad pick. If your current phone is working for you and you don't loathe it deep down in your heart, it may be worth holding off until at least Google I/O next month, or even wait till mid-summer.

A phone's age doesn't diminish its capability, only its relevance. That's how I think of it.

the difference in speed is barely noticeable, and the screen on the nexus 4 is beautiful ... at this point display and processor upgrades mean more on spec sheets than they do in actual use cause they really can't get much better. the only thing i'd like out of my n4 is more storage.

You can can call me Google-curious. I got my gf a galaxy note 2 and I don't hate it (although I wish I could have a 4.2-4.3inch flagship smart phone these days). So if I wanted to give android a try, I'd say the same as with Windows phone; it needs to be the best. So I want a nexus device...specifically a phone, not a tablet. I/O is around the corner and the nexus devices will get KLP before everyone else right? Now The Nexus 4 is beautiful, the camera I don't care about because I have the 808 pureview on me at all times anyways....

But, the display, I mean it's what Ill be looking at most of the time, and frankly, I never believed we needed 1080p on a smartphone before, but then the htf one came and it made me a believer. so the first thing on my mind is how poor is the nexus 4's 2012 screen compered to the screen tech of 2013?
Also the processor, is the nexus 4 futureproof in hardware? I mean, I don't really understand how a CPU works, but I get that the snapdragon 600 beats the s4 pro. and the 800 even more so. so my second question is, will the nexus 4, by 2013 standers, be a slow device?

lastly, Im wondering on the nexus 5. when do you recon we'll see this device, I mean a nexus 4 with 2013 hardware would be a dream (especially if they made it smaller). would it be worth the wait? or is the nexus 4's 2012 specs still good enough to play with the big new kids on the blokk?

Nexus 4 is not a bad buy at all, although it may seem old

Well I know that many people still have their HP Veers and Pre3s, So it not as old as those, and they are still pretty fast

Managed to break my Jesus 4 the other day, and after a few days back with my Galaxy Nexus I'm already starting to miss it. To me, that says it's far from old. :p

Edit: now that's an interesting typo...

The Nexus 4 is golly darned sexy and gosh crimminey this thread is lecherous. There still isn't another Nexus, so how could it be old? Even when there is, by September, how many phones will have KLP?

Old is a relative term. A phone that says Nexus on it will age much better than anything else. My old Nexus S 4G was running JellyBean from an OTA update and doing so well. So to me old = EOL, not supported.

The nice thing about the Jesus 4 is it is so cheap you can just buy another one if it breaks from the Google store.

Heck no the Nexus 4 isn't old already!

I just recently retired my Nexus S 4G and that was officially left at JellyBean 4.1.x

Now I'm rocking my GNex on official 4.2.2 (custom ROM/rooted).

So by no means is the N4 outdated.

Edit: forums bug, didn't post in this thread.

Nexus 4 will always have the latest version of Android on it. Not so with most other phones. It's already got a quad core processor, is fast, and a decent display, so what else would make it "new" ?
