Is there a minimum voltage to required in a battery in order to charge it.

I bought a new battery for a Samsung Galaxy S3, and put it into the phone. It powered up, but only lasted 10 mins or so. it wouldn't power up again, and even connecting the charger, the phone would not power up, nor would it produce the image of a charging battery. I took the battery out and measured the voltage ... 2.6V I suspect the "new" battery has been on a shelf in a warehouse for some years, and its initial low voltage is not even enough for the phone to recognize its presence and start charging it. charger, cable and phone all good, as the old battery powers up the phone and takes a charge. new battery is needed due to 'swelling' of old one. its about 5 yrs old and is simply on its last legs.
Is 2.6V enough of a starting position for a battery.

Hi and welcome to Android Central.

It's possible that they have a cut out voltage, however, I would have thought it would be lower.

Maybe the battery has dead cells and can't produce current. Can you return the new battery?
