Is there a way to force Eris to keep 3g ?

So i have this major reception fluxuation that i dont get on my droid or s2 , but i get on my eris , is there a system setting that will have it only connect to 3g ? ... ( also off topic but is there an app that i can change the trackball notifacation colors ? )
