Is there a way to make the phone stop looking for a signal?

My phone doesn't pick up a signal when I'm at work and it seems to drain the battery very quickly. The battery lists "Call Standby" as taking up 68%. So... Is there anyway to make the phone stop searching for a signal?

try getting juice defender. It's a really good battery saver app. I paid around $4.50 for the ultimate and it has a lot of customizable settings including on/off cell signal, on/off wifi based on location and some other cool features.

the data lags everytime i get out of the train (NYC) 10mins later it picks up the data signal. a bit annoying especially when I just want to enjoy on what I am paid for... is anyone else rebooting their phone when they encounter data lag? it seems to help but this shouldn't be the resolution for a smartphone.
