Is There A Way To Restore Single App Settings?

This question was brought on by the long discussion(s) we've been having about the Google Messages app.

In order to roll back the Samsung variant and install the open beta, we have uninstall all updates, which also deletes all the app data. I don't want to have to manually reassign all my personalized notification tones for my contacts.

Is there a way, via Google, Samsung, or 3rd party (without root), to backup and restore just a single app's settings?

I can't find a way to do this via Google and the method we use when setting up new phones. That's an all or nothing restore as far as I can tell.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

When I wanted to tinker with an app, I used Samsung backup for a single app, I've done it before with just the Samsung messages app. Might be able to do the same using the Google backup in the settings under accounts and backup for the Google messages

Anytime I deleted message app data and force stop it repopulate all the messages again but I don't have anything custom so can't say on that .

Thanks. Yes, the messages were no problem when I rolled back and then updated vis the open beta. It was the settings that were lost (not surprisingly).

Great idea, thanks. Messages isn't one of the apps listed in the Google sync section. I suppose that makes sense since it's the Sasmung variant of the app. Although I don't ever remember seeing Messages in the Google account sync section.

By Sasmung bakcup do you mean Smart Switch? It seems the only option is for a restore of everything not just a single app's data. In fact, I can't see a way to even restore on the same phone, only transfer between phones.

That's with mobile Smart Switch. I wasn't able to get the desktop version to work (won't recognize my phones)...for years, including recently. It seems it's no longer supprted? The app version I tried a week or so ago looked really old (d/l directly from Samsung).

no, not smart switch. if you go into settings, then accounts and backup, you can backup all the data on the phone to the samsung cloud or google drive. i have used the samsung cloud before when i accidentally deleted a group text. since i had samsung automatic backup turned on, i was able to go in and "reinstall" just the messages app and get that group text back. i see the google messages app isn't included in the samsung backup, not sure if its in the list for the google drive backup because i don't use it.

I don't have an option for Samsung cloud backup, only Google. I'm on a verizon variant S22 Ultra. I don't know if that's why.

Thing is, I believe if I could just fully uninstall Messages and then re-install it, the data including settings and personalizations would be automatically restored when I reinstalled it. I can only roll back to the version that shipped with the phone, though.

Thanks for your help.

Could be a Verizon thing, I'm on AT&T and have always had the Samsung cloud backup on all my Samsung phones. I went into the Google drive backup even though I don't use it and took a screenshot, it looks almost identical to the Samsung backup, I didn't try, but you still might be able to select a single app backup if you want to keep the data for that app to try a beta of something Screenshot_20220402-163814_Google%20Play%20services.jpg

That's a Verizon thing. When I had a Verizon branded S10+ I did not have Samsung Cloud or Find My Mobile. I'm still using Verizon, but I have an unlocked S22 Ultra from Samsung, and I'm running the unlocked firmware not the Verizon firmware. I have both of those apps.

If I tap on the App or Device Settings entries there's no action (nothing opens) despite it indicating how many apps are backed up. So individual app data seems inaccessible .

Two words: Verizon Cloud. :-$
