Is there a way to turn on In call notification for SMS in the Nexus 4?

Is there a way to turn on in call notification for SMS messages on the Nexus 4? I have not been able to find this option and have missed important messages because I became accustomed to receiving these notifications on other Android phones.

I only get the "M" icon at the very top of the screen to indicate an email has arrived if I am on a call; no indication of a text message.

I think this would also useful as this is standard on BlackBerry or could somebody suggest an app?

Well this is strange!

Just on a call a text message icon appeared at the top of the screen!

First time it has worked for me and hope it does all the time now.

I use Chomp and there is a setting for this. Not sure about the stock app
