IS there a way to turn the speaker phone on while using google maps on Samsung Centura?

Just purchased the samsung centura and tried the google maps app. I spoke the location and the app found it but as I was driving I could not hear the directions from the phone. There appears to be no way to turn on the speaker phone while using the google map apps. Any suggestions? thanks.
