I know on the Moto Droid all you have to do is long press a song in your music library and then choose it as a ringtone. I've tried the same on the captivate but it doesn't work. Has anyone found a way to use music as a ringtone?

I'm sure there is another way, but I just use a ringtone creator app.. it allows for you to cut the music or just play the song.. Hope this helps, if you can't find another way around it.

Use the application "My Files" to create a "Ringtones" folder in /sdcard.
Browse with the files application to your "Music" folder and drill down to the music file you want to use as a Ringtone. Long press on the file and choose "Copy". Copy the file to the /sdcard/Ringtones folder. Quit "My Files" and go into Settings -> Sound and display -> Voice Call ringtone. You should see the new music file in the listing and you can select it.

I recommend you download the the app called ringdroid which will allow you to make custom ringtones and notifications right on your phone using you mp3's. Just start the app select mp3, select the part and length of the mp3 and it will ask what you want to set it as, select and set.

That was exactly what I was looking for...not having my own ringtones that I've become accustomed to was driving me nuts. Thanks! :D

Definately try Ringdroid. It'll prompt you to set your mp3 file as a ringtone or alarm or notification sound. VERY easy to use!

Is there a way to set a ringtone to an individual contact. All the suggestions that I've seen don't work.

The option does come up if I listen to the ringtone in the music player and then choose to set it as a ringtone for a contact. The problem is that the contact list only includes AT&T contacts. When I search for a contact, it will show up. It won't attach the ringtone to the contacts found in the search though--only to the AT&T ones.

Does it have to do with what contacts are on the SIM?

hi, i haven't tested this cause i never really cared to check, but i remember reading somewhere that people only were able to select one default ringtone for all calls and they were unsure why. and in response people said its because they were trying to set ringtones onto contacts that were synced to gmail or facebook. they stated you must save your contacts to your phone to give it its own personal ringtone. i didnt check to see if it worked on phone only, on sim contacts only, or both. hope this helps =)

This is what I had to do. I saved the contact to my phone and then linked it to my Gmail contact. Once the contact is saved to the phone, you can change the ringtone and you have more options too.

Ok I created this folder and I'm not seeing the ringtone?

is there a way to save all my gmail contacts to the phone?
i'm not seeing such an option... please help
i just spent like 2 hours yesterday setting up my contacts on google for the first time and trying to get it all sorted out (not linked to wrong contacts) on the phone
it was such a mess

Aphrony, I think you are correct here.

All my contacts are synced to gmail. The only ones that I can see when trying to set a ringtone are the ones that are "not listed" in my contact list--meaning on my phone.

Wouldn't the fact that Android is made by google insinuate that anything synced with google would be the same as something on your phone. How do I get contacts to see them as being the same thing?
