WIFI App for current number on Verizon Tablet that is not allowing texts

I recently ported my number into a new Verizon tablet because I was told that I would be able to receive text messages on the Verizon Messages app. The person who told me this was misinformed. Now I can not receive texts to this number.

Does anyone know of an app that will let me use a current number to receive texts over WIFI? I tried setting this up in Hangouts but it verifies by calling. Other apps verify by text. Since my tablet does not allow this, I am not able to verify it. Is there an app that verifies by e-mail? That might be a way around this mess. Thanks.

Texts by SMS? No, that's a 2G phone function, it has nothing to do with wifi. (It's the same as a phone call, just using different apps to interpret the packets of data differently.)
