Is there a workaround to get the updated Android Auto to SHOW calendar events like the old version?

The new Android Auto did away with a home screen in favor of a limited app draw. Well- on that home screen I used to be able to see appointments for the upcoming day, click on them, and then Google Maps would take me there. No more- did Google not consider this when rolling out the new AA and ditching the home screen? Can anyone think of a workaround that doesn't involve manually searching for the event on my phone before connecting to AA (that's just counter-productive)?
