Still a newbie to Android. Is there a way to get the optical joystick to turn on the phone much like the iPhone?

If your rooted there is a way to turn the phone on with the joystick. There is a thread in the hacks section with directions and a link.

If you are not rooted, Widget Locker will allow you to use the optical trackpad or the volume buttons to wake the phone.
