Do I need a cable to connect it or is the nexus 7'1st gen now cast screen compatible

Welcome to Android Central! The 2012 Nexus 7 is supposed to support Miracast, but from what I've read, that support has been problematic. Your next best bet for wireless screen casting is with a Chromecast.
