Is there some way to get AT&T to unlock my phone?

I've tried multiple times contacting AT&T to unlock my AT&T HTC One X+ but have been unsuccessful in getting an unlock code. The first time was months ago and they said I had to wait until June. I called back a few weeks ago and they told me they don't have an unlock code for my phone. Is it possible to not have an unlock code?

Just call them and tell them that your leaving the country and you wanna use it with another GSM carrier while your over there.

I just called att about my HTC One and I have had it for only 3 months and they text me the unlock code. So I'm still under contract. They seemed very nice and willing to help me. But your account has to be in good standing for I think 6 months of total payments. Meaning nothing late past the due date.

Go on eBay.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I both tried to contact AT&T and tried ebay and neither seemed to work for me. I'm gonna go to one of those small cell phone shops in my area and see if they can do anything tomorrow.

If your service provider cannot provide you with the unlock code you can contact any online service.I have unlocked my phone from Classicunlocking.com where they provide you with unlock code for HTC ONE X+..If you want you can try them...

Kind of a redundant question, but I want to make sure I understand. So you need an unlocked phone (get a code) from AT&T if you want to use your AT&T phone with a local GSM network sim in a non-US country?

Yes. AT&T has to unlock the sim card slot so the non-US carriers SIM will work. Technically when you buy the phone the SIM slot is locked.. Which basically means put any other SIM in it other than AT&T and it will not work.. It will say the SIM is locked.

But once unlocked the non-US SIM cards will work and connect to the GSM carrier of your choice overseas.

For most phones, I usually called them and they gave me the unlock code free.
Since I am in Kenya, all I had to say is that the phone was a gift from a relative and they usually gave me the unlock code for free. Let me look for the number to call :D

I have an old Galaxy S2 I gave to a friend so he could try T-Mobile Prepaid. I forgot it was locked, but I just called AT&T last night and said "I would like to unlock my old Galaxy S2", answered a few security questions so they knew it was my phone I was unlocking, asked for the last four digits of the IMEI, they looked it up, badda bing badda boom, read off a code for me. My friend hasn't had time to try the code, but I think the whole phone call was maybe 5-10 minutes including a few minutes on hold waiting for an agent.

For everything else, I've been transferred to 3-4 departments before they found the one that could help me. This time, it was the very first person to answer the phone.

She showed absolutely no curiosity as to why I was unlocking my old phone, and I offered no explanation.

It was very much a "please help me unlock my phone", "Absolutely, sir! Let me pull up the script for that and get this done as fast as possible for you!" transaction. I was very pleasantly surprised.

how long do you have to wait if your a new customer.

I don't know if there is a defined wait time. As long as you are in good standing with them, you can just tell them you want to use the phone overseas on a trip. If you decide to cancel your account you'll have to pay an ETF anyway, so I don't see why they'd care if you unlocked the phone as long as they have some assurance you will actually be paying the ETF and not just skipping out on them, cheap phone in hand.
