"Leaked rumors from Verizon is... that as long as you have a phone on Verizon with an unlimited data plan, you are locked in. Doesn't matter if the phone is 3G right now... you will be able to upgrade to 4G and you will be able to upgrade to newer phones in the future with the discount price and make changes to your plan. The tiered plans only affect Verizon customers adding a new line to their contract."

" Not so. Just went through this with VZW yesterday. If you currently have a 3G unlimited plan, you are grandfathered in for 3G umlimited. If you move to a 4G phone after the 7th, you will fall into the tiered plans. It really sucks that they are splitting that up. I work in LA (SoCal) and have a strong 4G signal, and plan on moving to 4G in the future. In order to keep that unlimited, I need to buy a 4G phone by the 6th."

Some help here? Anybody? If this is true then we are really getting screwed by VZW. Because eventually there will be no new 3g phones to buy. So it is either live with old, outdated phones or upgrade and lose unlimited data.

Look at it this way - if you are grandfathered under the current 3g plan then you are in good shape. Hopefully by the time you are ready to move to 4g enough time will have passed that VZW will have made modifications to the tiered offering that make sense.

Remember it was not long ago that data was tiered for 3g when it was new. Then it went to unlimited as 3g became ubiquitous. Hopefully we'll see the same here.

Email verizon your opinion on the new tiered data plans. I think the more who write the more they might listen

I went to the Verizon store yesterday to ask them directly this question and the rep said it did not matter that I had a 3g only phone. If I upgrade to a 4 g phone I will still be grandfathered in. I guess we will know for sure after July 7th when people start to upgrade.

I asked a local verizon rep about it also, and he said you're grandfathered in as long as you have -any- unlimited data plan, whether 3g or 4g.

Good to know. I upgraded to unlimited data last night, and I don't want to loose it should I ever want/have to upgrade to a 4G phone.
