Is this normal? I find it poor...

Had my S3 for a few days now. The battery sucks.

I've got GPS, Bluetooth, constant pinging Widgets off. They only Widget I run is the calendar. I run the stock wallpaper.

Last night I went to bed at 12am with 90% batter and woke up at 7am with 70% 20% over 7hrs and I didn't even use it? I run WiFi when at home to save on data. When not at home I turn it off and just run 4G so I don't use 2 radios at once. I run AutoBrightness, my screen timeout is 30 secs. This battery life is poor. I cannot use my phone at work (8hrs a day) and I still can barely make it through a day without charging by 9pm. (battery at 20%) I've tried different things each day, nothing seems to improve. The only thing I haven't tried is running 3G.

Do I need to turn off the 4G and just run 3G? Take is back to Verizon and get another one? Get something other than Samsung?

What is the total screen on time for you at the end of the day? Also the only reason I can think of that would drain the battery so fast is of you don't have very good 4g signal.I've found that the battery just gets killed by having a weak signal. But if not that it could just be a defective phone.

I found that running auto brightness was a major battery drain. I have downloaded a widget to manually adjust brightness and it has increased my battery life significantly.

Do you have any location services enabled?

I ask because I usually don't use them, but I decided to give them a try recently and my battery life plummetted. I turned them off, and everything is good again.

I have all those things running and easily get 12-13 hrs so I would check your apps. Maybe u have one that is draining your battery. Or just a bad battery.

The only things I can think that are polling are Facebook or Gmail. I don't have any weather widgets running, I do have the weather channel app.

Maybe I'll turn off AutoBrightness and find an app to control is. Although I think you can set the Brightness in Settings with an App. With 4G I usually only have 2-3 bars. If by location services you mean "Use my location" or GPS, no those aren't enabled. Total screen time after I get home from work would be 2hrs tops. The rest is just checking when I get a notification.

Heading out of a 4G area for the weekend. Maybe that will show a difference.

When you sleep, shut off wifi/data, all apps, gps/location services. (If you can).
With 7 hours of sleep, my battery goes down 2% overnight.

I shutoff wifi, gps/locatin i never have on, and it still happens. Not sure what you mean by shutoff data. I shutoff the Apps by holding the Home button and swiping them off the screen correct?

this is why I root/flash for de-bloated rom's. All that running on your screens uses push notifications, what do you think those things do, they use power.

Remove every widget from your screen, and I bet your battery life increases a lot.

Shut off data as in mobile data (3g/4g)
Wouldn't that make it to where I couldn't receive phone calls? I'd like to be able to get an emergency call overnight, if needed.

I will remove the 1 calendar widget that is left, the rest are all gone. Other that the Clock.

Either way I'd charge the phone and let it drop down to under 10% during the first week of usage. My battery gets drained because I get weak reception for calls inside my house even though I had no issues with my Gnex or Razr maxx as far a cell standby. There is no perfect phone and considering that I have a landline right next to me this isn't really a big issue. If a,b are amazing c is probably going to be less then perfect. All in all I love the GS3 for it's beautiful large display and insanely fast processor and the 2 gbs of ram really speed the phone up.

Mobile data and phone connectivity are different. You can still make and receive calls and texts when mobile data is off (except for picture messages, I believe). The only way you lose the ability to make calls when you turn off mobile data is if you use Google Voice, Skype, or another VOIP provider/app to call instead of your phone itself.

Have you taken a look at the battery stats from Settings->Battery to see what app(s) are consuming the most power? (Note that there is a bug in the calculation for cell standby that makes it appear that it is consuming more power than it actually is)

That's for the clarification. I'll check the battery stats from Samsung. I've also installed the Phone Info app. Going to try a few days on 3G to see if there is a big difference.

Thanks for the tip I wasn't aware of the bug with the battery read out.

Just an FYI, the weather service on the phone is always updating even if you don't have the widget on your screen.

If you don't use the weather widget (part of the samsung clock/weather widget) or use the weather on the lock screen, you can disable it.

Go into Settings -> Application Manager, Select the "All" Tab and scroll down until you see the App named Weather and Weather main. Tap on each one to go into it, click the "Force Stop" button to stop it then press the "Disable" button so it won't run anymore. If you want to turn it back on, go back into the apps manager and scroll all the way top the bottom of the "All" list, this is where all the disabled apps are placed, go into it and then click on Enable.

What widget/app is that?
