I have been trying to root my epic now for the past few hours and am coming up empty handed. I have installed the proper drivers, placed the phone in debug mode and no matter what is done one click root continues to tell me that the phone is not connected, so i began searching and have done everything that i have found in attempts to fix this problem. I have rooted a handful of EVOS and also a few Heros, so its not my first time dealing with root, but if someone could point out what im missing it would be a huge help. Im going to try this on another computer on the off chance that its my laptop which is running windows XP. Again any help would be awesome.

You can also click on the link in my signature and I have a video showing you how to properly root if you need help :)

I'd be interested to know if the Bonsai MasterKey is any more successful in communicating with your device. Bonsai Tools for Android Devices | Bonsai for Android

I've also seen cases where another USB device plugged into the bus will cause a conflict.

Also, driver installs on windows are very error prone. The Samsung drivers appear to install a minimal driver toe hold, then a reboot is required, then when you plug in the phone (with USB debug enabled) it starts an download and install process for another set of drivers for the Samsung USB. You have to allow that process to complete and then do another reboot before trying the phone rooting process again.

Many thanks to qbking77...your videos made it very easy...I got tired of dealing with the driver issues so I just went with Gingerbreak, and flashed urban fury, not to thrilled with it at this point, so ive started that nice process of flash a rom, use it for a few days and then repeat. so thanks again for input...if anyone can point me toward a rom that is very simplistic, easy on the battery yet still fast enough to be impressive please let me know

Best thing to do is download a few of them and put them on your sdcard (they don't take up that much space) and you can test drive em each for a few days. FYI, the ROMs themselves aren't really the flashy part, they are all based on being pretty basic its the custom themes that you flash over the top of them that can make a ROM go from boring to exciting ;)

Seriously, amazing how touchy these epics are with usb! I bought five cables, all exactly the same.

I used them all with my pre, but two do not work with my epic! Amazingly, the Palm supplied usb cable, does work!

You bet. I'm still using my stock cable that came with my Epic and it still works great for Odin/rooting/usb connecting... Go figure... One day I know I'll have to order up a new one, BB cables seem to work very well.
