issues with rooting

I have been trying to root my nexus for a few days now. I run into the same problem everytime though. my pc recognises the device as long as its turned on completly but as soon as i use wug's or the manual root when i get to the recovery screen my usb no longer recognises my device. i have downloaded samsungs usb drivers and installed them manual. and i have used the sdx as well. it pops up as a andriod 1.0 when i go into recovery mode and it makes it undiscovered. any ideas or thoughts?

what guide are you following?
what Nexus do u have Galaxy or Nexus S?
Do you have SDK installed?

Uninstall the samsung drivers and install USB drivers from Android SDK
