I've been a palm user for many moons and recently a friend just gave me his old sprint hero. Its running build 1.56.651.2 and the only thing I really want to do is run the absolute minimum required so that this thing will be a blazing beast of joy. I've seen many people recommending frodo, what say you?

Am I safe following this tutorial or is there a more recent one that will work on my old device. I tried the one click by direct download of the apk oonto my hero but it wouldn't run it.

Search for the Sprint Hero 2.1 RUU. It's a windows program that will upgrade the phone to the most current 2.1 software where you can then root using the one-click method posted in this forum, or with the Z4 App.

You can use the link you posted but some of the downloads might no be active anymore.

Thanks magnus for the quick reply: I searched and found this thread but unfortunately the links are all outdated. I also found this sprint link but it says I need to install htc sync first, is this correct?

Yeah, you'll need sync installed.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!

Thanks user, what do you recommend for the absolute fastest rom out there. I like minimilism. :)

Ok so I ran the one click method but when i get to step 3)
2)When your phone has fully booted, power off again.
3)This time hold,Home+power continue to hold until recovery pops up.
It's coming to a "CLEARSTORAGE" PROMPT, Delete all user data?
Action yes Send no
What the heck am i doing wrong?

It sounds like the Recovery is not loading onto the phone. Run the 1-click app again, reboot the phone, power off the phone, then hold home+power on until the screen loads (don't let go until the screen loads).

If the wipe data appears again reboot the phone. When loaded, check the app drawer and look for the app called "Super User". It should have a skull with cross bones.

If that is there then you are rooted but don't have a recovery. this can be fixed by downloading ROM Manager from the Market and flash the Clockwork Mod recovery from the app. It will ask to confirm the phone model and let it do it's thing.

When it completes, power off the phone and power on while holding home. You should be good to go. Let us know :)

srkmagnus: You have skype or aim? I installed astro filemanager but when I drop the file onto my htc from my computer it's not showing up anywhere on the htc. I figured it would just be in the root of the sd card...

Never mind, I had to unplug the usb cable then it saw it fine. I still had it plugged in so it was probably still mounted.

Two easy questions: Is reboot the same as just shut down and turn back on? And should i just go with cyanogen latest stable rom if i want speedy? What are your favorites?

It's the Volume Down + Power Button, I did this and it went right into the recovery mode. I guess I think I skipped over the little pop-up on the htc figuring it just said what I already read on here and on the one-click sticky, but that should prob be updated. I'll let you know what happens next thanks sir.

Acrook, you are going into fastboot. I'm guessing the screen is white, correct? If so, the recovery screen needs to be black with green text. Yes, reboot is the same as power off and turn on.

For ROMs, I'm using CM7 rc4. CM6 was good, as is everything aosp developed. Anything that doesn't have sense is great, imo.

Screen is black with green text when I did the Volume Down + Power button instead of the Home + Power

I think it loaded an old recovery. It works fine, but you can upgrade it by downloading the ROM Manager app and flashing the recovery called Clockworkmod provided when you open the app. It will ask to confirm the phone model and accept.

Big thanks to magnus, he hopped on aim and helped me a bunch. I'm running CyanogenMod-6.1 and loving the simplicity and "smoothness" of it. My only gripes are no group texting and VM notifications. Fixing to install the sprint voicemail pak to see if that fixes one.
