It's been real, Nexus 4

weird, i just use Skype to call home and I have Skype set up to display my cell number when I call so people know it's me. With that setup though; they can't call me. But anyone in the local country I'm visiting can (I just give them the mobile number that was assigned to me by the local provider). I have been able to use Skype over 3G or 4G with no issues but I am aware that this is blocked in some countries.

It isn't necessarily bugs per say, but issues with the phone. I can list some out:

My first Nexus 4 (back when the second bath of shippments shipped out - late November, and I received mine in December):

-Earpiece buzz, microphone issues, wi-fi issues, GPS issues, frequent loss of signal, battery

I can confirm I also have the earphone buzz and frequent loss of signal. I have a few friends also on TMobile with an HTC One S and the other friend with the latest HTC One. Both get better signals than my Nexus 4. we also tested by making data connections and calls to see if zero-bars (no signal) on Nexus 4 but 2-3 bars on HTC devices was real. It's real.

Bugs? You should Google "Sleep of Death." It's not isolated to just the N4, but it's a serious issue.

Sorry for the dumb q but is that 13 bucks for a sim card that you bought there??
r

Yep, that's right! 13 bucks. And if you ever go to Hong Kong, just send me a message. I can give you directions to where to find the store in the Hong Kong International Airport.

As someone who travels for work for a living (and whose finger is hovering over the "buy now" button on the N4 page as we speak); this is what I want to hear. Also, right now I have an iPhone and its true, SIM Cards from other providers in other countries cost peanuts and they give you much more service than what we get here. It's a bit embarassing.

Yes, it is a truly wonderful feeling when you go over to another nation and you get wonderful service for so cheap!

By the way: I loved my Nexus 4, but I would highly recommend waiting man. I'm sure your iPhone will fit your purposes for now, but there are many great new Smartphones that will be coming out soon, and the Nexus 5 will surely come out later this year as usual. Also, unless you plan on rooting your phone, the lack of LTE isn't worth it. One of the reasons I got the HTC One too was due to LTE being there in my city, and it truly is worth it.

How do you know the bars are a true reflection of the signal received?
It'd be easy to make a phone where the bars sat at '5' all day long but that's not necessarily a true reflection of the signal the phone is receiving.

Now, I don't know if there's an international mobile phone standard for what signal strength each bar represents but if there's not then it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that each Nexus 4 bar represents twice the signal of the HTC.

Another thing, unless you test them side by side in real time how can you be sure that issue was not a transmitter one by the phone company which has since been rectified?
There's far too many variables for you to outright say these are Nexus issues.

And there are far too many assumptions you are taking to assume that there are no serious issues with the Nexus 4.

As I have mentioned, I truly did enjoy this phone. I got it a little less than a month after it released. But the problems were there since the beginning.

Bars don't have to be a true reflection of signal But on the nexus 4, when the bar area is completely black, that means there is no signal at all. That means no data, no cellular reception, etc... That is serious. If it just showed no bars and the area was still grey, that just means weak signal. That is fine, but that is not the case. The LOS situation was a frequently reported issue with the Nexus 4. Just look on XDA or just search for Nexus 4 issues. It is a frequent one, and a dangerous one for people who rely on their phone for things more than entertainment.

As I've already mentioned, I'm still with T-Mobile, and am holding a better connection and having a constant one as well with the HTC One.
I went back to ATT due to what I perceived to be a T-mobile issue but it is sounding more and more like the N4's issue. I wonder if my experiences would be any different with the One (although I am moving to an area outside T-mo's coverage so the point is probably moot).

I am glad those of you who have the N4 find it to be a pleasant experience but many of these issues are well documented since its release. In the end, I am happy with my decision to go with the One but I will revisit the Nexus 5 when it is released especially if it is a Motorola device.

I'm on my second N4. The first had really bad battery life and signal strength. The second one has much better battery life and better signal strength but the signal still pales in relation to my Z10 (same SIM card, same network). Even when I was in NYC using a TMobile SIM, the signal wasn't that great. As a fair comparison, at a Virgin Mobile store when I am, they had an iPhone 5, Z10, Q10, S4, and N4 and if you checked the signal strength on all phones, the N4 would have the lowest.

I also read loads of posts about signal strength and battery life.

Still I keep the phone because I like it and I can't justify forking out for a HTC One (and I'm not a fan of the S4). Hopefully the N5 will have better radios.
