Hi here is a newbie q's. Well i'm happy with my optmius on virgin, but I travel a lot to Mexico and there of course I dont have coverage. So it's possible to have 2 carriers programed on the same phone, so I can just switch to the Mexican carrier (Iusacell is a CDMA Carrier) they dont care the phone isnt bought from them. They are willing to put all the data of phone on their network, and give me the right codes to put on my phone. But before going with them to make a contract, I want to know if this would be possible. -any hints for search on that topic?-

BTW: yeah my phone is rooted.

Thanks.

Lol no. Virgin Mobile ESN's and MEID's will only work on Sprint towers. You can't just go and randomly change them. You'd have to have a completely different phone to use a different carrier.

Uhm wrong dude, I have send a few Sprint HTC Evo 4g phones and an Optimus V to friends in Mexico and they are working like a charm. with a Mexican carrier :)

Thats why I was wondering with the freedom of android could be possible to have 2 carriers running on the same phone.

But thanks anyway.

Yeah, I meant at the same time. Impossible. lol. You sent them the phones, yes. But they aren't using two at once, they are only using one. If you wanted to use it on 2 different carriers at the same time, you'd have to constantly change the ESN's back and forth.

Oh ok..then only with the qpst would be possible..I though there would be some app that can store the parameters and changing them on the fly.

Thanks.

You know, android is based off linux, so who knows. Maybe they do have an app that can do that. Never heard of one though.

yeah... I think I have something to work with..an script would be the answer, first knowing exactly which files are changed, backup, and store the parameters from a second file, and reboot.

Yeah. Let's stop talking about it though before we get banned or something. Lol. Doing such things is highly illegal.

There's nothing illegal about this. If you have legitimate accounts, you have the right to use your phone as you please. This issue was settled by the courts this past year, though in the news all you read was that it is ok to jailbreak your iphone now.

At the same time, the carriers have the right to protect their networks. I would call both networks, tell them the situation, and ask them for advice. You don't have to follow their advice, but they may have an easier solution for you.

In the past, it was just a matter of switching out the sim card, and it was completely legal then as well. Now days, it may be a bit more complex than a sim card switch, but it's still perfectly legal.

You can register your MEID/ESN with two carriers at once. There is nothing illegal or wrong with that part. The hard part is connecting to both of their towers. That is where your PRL comes into play. Each carrier will have their own to tell your phone which towers are theirs and which are roaming. To switch between carriers, you'll have to switch PRL's....orrrr, do what that guy did in the XDA forums and create a hybrid PRL with both carriers' towers listed as not roaming. That way, the phone will freely connect to both. That would take care of calling, but data would be another story.

(add the words "I think" to every one of those sentences)

Modifying the phone's ESN? That's always been illegal. It just depends in some states what you're going to use it for.

Modifying a ESN is not illegal, modifying it with the intent to defraud the phone company is illegal. But anyways where do you see anyone talking bout modifying a ESN? All I see is talk about registering a MEID/ESN with two carriers at once.

You have to be able to load the PRL of the Mexican carrier every time you went to Mexico, then switch back when in the USA.

Noone ever mentioned changing the ESN, and that isn't automatically illegal, it's what you do with it after modifying it that might be illegal.

Please explain to me a legitimate reason to change a esn/meid?
It might not be illegal to do it but the intentions most people have for doing this mostly shady.

If your intent is to defraud the phone company then yes it's illegal, but if you have no intent to defraud anyone then it is perfectly legal.

ESN "cloning" was done a lot by the phone companies them self's back in the day when handheld units first came out. They would clone a car phone's esn on to a handheld unit so there was 1 number for both units.

I cant think of one reason to clone a esn/meid in todays technological world.

Thats why Im asking.

What the OP is asking isnt cloning as much as its having two lines on one phone. I know my old BB Storm could have multiple numbers on it not sure about android tho. Also not sure if it could have two number from different carriers.

I dont see a real problem with it as long as both companies are ok with it. However I do see VM probably balking at the idea.

One issue that might require a modified ESN is if you are trying to use an Android phone on an Exchange system. Most Exchange admins don't trust Android yet, but there are some who are trying it out. In some cases, they will change a phone's ESN for testing purposes, or just to use the phone entirely in-house on the Exchange system.

Recently, the govt (I think the FCC) approved cell phone repeaters, much to the dismay of the carriers. Now you don't need a femtocell to improve reception in your home, you can instead use a repeater. With a repeater or a femtocell, there are instances where you might alter your ESN (though to be honest, I don't know why at the moment, I'm just learning about repeaters for work now).

The courts stated it last year, you have the right to do what you wish with your phone. However, the carriers also have the right to protect their networks. So one person's rights end where the other's begin. See Title 18 USC section 1029 if you really want to get confused! ;)
