I've made the leap from iOS to Android!!!

Well I did it. This morning I walked into my neighborhood AT&T Corporate store and upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an HOX. I must admit I was a little apprehensive and almost didn't go through with it. I have been suckling on Apple's smartphone teat for 4 years, staying hidden behind their walled garden, drinking their Kool-Aid and thumbing my nose at Android users like I had it all figured out and they were the idiots. As the years progressed and I moved up from the OG phone to the 3G, I continued to be jaded and biased towards the "Jesus Phone", even as I began to grow annoyed with the closed-nature of the device. Being tied to iTunes for everything meant having to keep that bloated carcass of software installed on my PC and dealing with multiple crashes, aggravating error messages, and having to uninstall and reinstall iTunes several times. This continued with the iPhone 4, but at least wireless syncing helped, but this didn't quell my envy of the ever-improving Android platform.

And that brings me to today. With Apple basically ignoring the need for a WIDER screen, and the aging, non-customizable UI, I have had it with Apple. It's a beautiful, functional device, don't get me wrong, but they're old news, and I'm ready for the future.

I want to thank you all for making up my mind on my device of choice. I am happy to report that as soon as the phone was activated and in my hand I quickly went into Software Update and got the notification that there was an update available. Since we were also upgrading our plan to Mobile Share and activating our iPad for the plan, we got to stick around for awhile and I mooched their wifi to download the update. Of course I had to wait to get home to update as the phone only had about 20% battery life left and it wouldn't let me update until I had it plugged in for about 20 minutes. But after that, I had the 4.0.4 goodness. Sense is still 4.0, but it is still smooth as silk and better than I could ever imagine. I'll post my thoughts next week when I've had a good chance to put it through it's paces. Now to figure out what launcher to get and other improvements. Again, thank you all for your information and opinions...it definitely helped.

Heartwarming read :)

Glad to have ya aboard the goodship Google.
Seeing as how you made a good choice of a phone in my biased opinion, just run the default Sense launcher for a week or so an get used to it, then look into other launchers and if they need root access.
Then, some cool custom roms that have the carp removed and cleaned up for snappy usage in most cases an more enjoyable experiences, again in most cases.

A whole new world welcomes you :)

Ha I just did the same thing a week ago and it has been great.
The phone is awesome and functions smooth and without any hiccups whatsoever.
Enjoy your new phone and toy.

Unfortunately now that he upgraded to 4.0.4 he won't be able to get root or custom roms anymore till a new unlock is found.
That was a nasty trick by At&t in locking the phone down with the upgrade.

I wasn't planning on rooting just yet as I really want to get a feel for this phone and decide whether I like Sense or not. I've already replaced the keyboard with SwiftKey and am amazed at how awesome it is. If anyone has any suggestions for must-have apps I'd appreciate it.

Juice Defender Ultimate and Lookout. And there are a gazillion other great suggestions in the Tips and Tricks thread and the iOS to Android thread. Would've suggested SwiftKey, but you already found it.

Nice to have you on the Android side. And you picked a great device to start your android journey with.

Glad you jumped ship! Any questions you have post them here and hopefully you enjoy the device!

Glad to find this thread. I was a fickle iPhone to BlackBerry to iPhone jumper for years, and have had every iPhone since the first...but the same old same old is getting boring, and iTunes is the most frustrating thing imaginable, and it's getting worse not better.

I have a local friend who wants to trade his week old AT&T HOX for my iPhone 4s today or tomorrow, and although it'll be my first dive into Android...and I am VERY skittish about it, threads like this one are pushing me closer to pulling the trigger.

Unless there's nothing wrong with the one x, I'd say just go for it. It's really an awesome phone. Can't see why anyone would want to trade the HOX for a 4s.

But I too felt very secure with Apple and I was a little scared of the unknown, but enough was enough. That little phone had to go. Jumped ship may 6th and never looking back.

Size
Ease of Use

My device has a 4.5" screen and it's huge to the point where I'm actually starting to complain about the size quite a bit these days. I'll likely make the jump to iOS if Android manufacturers don't start releasing smaller high-end devices.

Also, the accessory ecosystem for iOS devices is so fundamentally superior to Android that it isn't even funny.

The ironic thing about this is that most people I know with iPhones get them precicely because of the size of the device, but most people here damn the screen size on it :-P

Well, for me, the main reason I jumped ship to Android was the small-as-all-get-out screen. I don't have plates for hands, but my fingers (and especially my thunbs) are too fat for the tiny keyboard in iOS. Plus, my eyes aren't getting any better as the years progress so I need that extra screen real estate.

I'm not going to turn this into an Android vs. iOS debate because that wasn't the reason for my original post to begin with. I have witnessed (and, admittedly partook in) many a bashing debate regarding Android. Most of those arguing in favor of Apple (including myself) were extremely biased and had no real evidence to the contrary that iOS was better. Everything was anecdotal and speculation as we were all exclusively Apple users and had never once dipped our toes in the proverbial, green-tinted waters of Android. I have been using it for only 2 days now, and so I am by no means a convert yet. There are still many quirks I have to get over first, and the software isn't perfect by any means (had a couple app crashes already), but I like what I see and this was definitely the best choice for me. Your mileage may vary.
