I'm all the way new to this. I found the actual rooting process to be easy and very well done. I used the instructions on theunlockr.com. I saw that site suggested by one user to another in another thread. Even after doing all of this though, I still don't really understand what it is that I've done. I'll try my best to clarify.
The thing I'm still confused about are the roms. I followed this tutorial How To: Root the Motorola Droid (Android 2.0.1 & 2.1) | TheUnlockr followed by this one up to step 2 How To: Load a Custom ROM on the Motorola Droid (Android 2.0.1 & Android 2.1) | TheUnlockr and then finally this one How To: Get Android 2.2 (Froyo) On Your Motorola Droid Right Now! | TheUnlockr
Now after I did all that I guess I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the difference between the kernel and the rom:
1. Are those two different things?
2.I placed the kernel on my phone that gave me a max 800 mhz cpu. What rom did I use, based on the links that I posted?
3.Is that just a stock 2.2 rom?
4. If that is stock 2.2 and I wanted to use a custom rom....how would I go about updating to one of those?
5. Do I have to use the same process I did in those links or could I use an app to just apply another rom? (Keep in mind, LOL, I'm still not completely sure how the roms work.)
6. If I do apply another rom, will my settings, apps, and contacts and other things of that nature stay the same and the rom will change around them? Or will I have to completely set everything up again? (reactivate phone etc...)
7. If I do decide that I want the kernel to be set to a faster max, do I just place it in the root like I did the 800 mhz zip file (see links up top) and then just boot up holding down "X" and install from zip and then run that zip file?
8. Finally, I know this question is probably always asked....but what TYPICALLY is different between roms. I see that there are usually 3 or 4 different ones that people like. Are they situational in a sense...."On the weekend I like this rom, during the week I prefer this one?" Or is it just the enthusiasts that constantly switch roms and most people would probably find a rock solid one and stick with it?
I have more questions but those are the main ones. I understand they are probably extremely noobish so bear with me.
