Ive used 99% of my internal storage; advice on how to free some up?

Ive got a 32gb device with 10gbs going to the system, 10gbs in apps and 10 in photos.

First question would be: does anyone use only Google Photos to store pics or do you keep them on your device as well?
This would naturally free up a lot of room for me.

Second, does 10gbs for system and 10gbs for apps sound like a lot relative to the "average user"?

I have an 32GB n5 and I have about a gig left. I'm working on deleting photos on Google Photos online but going cautiously. So far so good but it does make me nervous. I have about 17GB in apps and only 1-2 GB in photos so even deleting the photos won't help that much. I could clear some cache but that makes me nervous too that I'll loose stuff. If I could do it by app that would be better. Really need a larger device but no job = no money = no new phone. My next will be a minimum 64 and preferably 128 gb. I really want to download several more apps so this a problem!

I have a 200GB SD card. If you have a M8, you should get a SD card. They are really inexpensive now.

I use Google Photos, it's great for backups and automatically created stories and little movies about the photos you take. it uploads while it's charging, on wifi. 10gb for photos and 10gb for apps seems normal but if you send it to Google Photos you can delete them once in a while. Don't forget to clean the cache also, it's on storage settings. I wouldn't let it get to 99 percent of used storage since it tends to slow down the Smartphone. I have the 16gb version and a 32gb micro sd card class 10 speed , it cost 19 euros but it's like 8 bucks now and a faster one and all, I would advise you to buy one.

Don't forget about text messaging. If you are saving everything from the beginning off time, this will also take up a lot of space, as well a system resources keeping up with a lot of messages. Also, within Settings, Storage, your can Select Cache Storage and delete its content...these are just temporary files.

SMS don't take lots of space, it's quite the opposite to be honest, since it's just text. Which "text messaging" are you referring to?

Text can have a lot to do with storage. It's not just text, it is like an SQL database with pointers, information and the addition of your MMS (pictures video) does impact both storage and the performance of loading this large file into memory.
