January update available

After mine rebooted, there was a notification to see what's new. It mentioned the ability to convert certain existing photos to portrait mode in Google Photos, the availability of Google Recorder, and something else I don't remember.

Nice nice.

I was hoping I'd see the same, but no such luck. I thought the Feature Drop thing was supposed to be part of this, but now I have no idea when I can expect to see the same on my phone. Pixel 3 XL, Google Fi.

I got it too.
If you didn't, search for Pixel Tips in the settings app. That should bring it up.
Don't expect too much, it just talks about: blur in portraits, portrait filter in duo and the recorder app.

YEAHHH!!! I finally received my December AND January updates today. Now those are "timely" updates after not receiving any since November. Google sure keeps the end user engaged by having us check for updates daily. I'm looking forward to my February and March updates in April now.

I got it on my pixel 3 and 3a both on day 1 this month. Before I even had a chance to flash the OTA.

Trust the process?

I also can't figure out how to use Google photos with portrait blur mode. Thankfully, whenever I take pictures of people, I usually take them in portrait mode anyways.

I just scanned through some shots in the Google Photos app. On a number of shots where there is a primary subject it offered a popup button to "Blur Background."

It actually worked pretty well. And surprisingly, wasn't limited to just photos taken by the Pixel - I had an ancient cropped image from a photo downloaded from Facebook that it actually offered to (and with limited success, did) blur.

How , nice nice. Haven't had the pleasure of that happening to me yet but oh well.

Me neither - can't get the blur option to show up on any pictures except if taken in Portrait mode

The photo has to meet certain criteria (although I don't know the exact criteria). I'm guessing there has to be a clear subject in the foreground, and enough depth separation with the background for the AI to offer the option.

Wow, can't believe that the "check for update" button actually works...

When I opened the Update process - it said last checked at around 4am and I was up to date. I hit the button and it said it was running the update process. I did not get the Dec update on my GoogleFi Pixel3 until I put a Verizon sim in. This time it is updating although it did say it was pausing until the phone was not busy with other processes unless I tapped RESUME - which I did.
