I received a message that there is a system update for my phone and after choosing "update now" the phone did not download anything, it shut down and then came back on to the android screen which looked like a boot menu with a red exclamation mark in the middle of the screen. I had to press the center bottom key on the phone in order to select and start the phone. No obvious change occurred. Was on WiFi at the time so not sure if that had anything to do with the issue updating. I have been trying to get the update OTA for the past few hours and nothing. Does anyone know why this update did not download or run? Thanks

Are you current on all of the updates leading up to this one? If not, that could be the problem.

This is true. Your phone must be currently up too date with all previous updates installed.

Also never mentioned in your post. Are you stock not rooted and none of you pre-installed software removed?

If you are rooted with a custom recovery or some of the pre-installed software has been removed, the update will also fail.

There are many reasons the software update can fail.

Thank you for your response. Purchased phone new but open box online and have discovered that although the phone looked new it has been rooted. The failure screen shows up as CWM-based recovery. I also found an app called supeuser. Not familiar with all this because I have never rooted phones. I am not sure what is next best step for me to get the update and not have any problems with the phone. Can I just do a factory reset? I assume that the root will not go away this way. Saw online how to unroot but seems a little risky (hard)? What do you suggest? Should I unroot, and if so what is the best way? Thank you for your time

You are already rooted. If I were you I would stay that way. I would update to jb using the method in the 4th post in the "Your way to update" thread. It is perhaps the easiest of the methods. However if you do it the way suggested, you will have to reload all your apps. There is a way to keep your apps but coming from its to jb it is a good idea to start fresh. If you want to keep your data and apps just flash the files as directed but skip the factory reset step. But if you have any issues your fix will likely be a factory reset anyway.

Thank You will try. I might try to unroot also

If you want to unroot use the method in post 4. There is two options in post 4. Rooted and unrooted. Choose the unrooted download and flash it in Odin. There should be a link to How to flash in Odin t Guide below the files.
