As we know when we switch on our phones and after we see the Samsung branding we eventually see process media notifications in the notification bar at the top of the screen, and in the case of Gingerbread I would see preparing USB storage and the word completed, same for the SD card, but since the upgrade to JellyBean all I see is preparing for the device and also for the SD card but no completed notifications, my apps etc seem to work fine, but just wondered if this was just a cutting down of what we visually see from the GB to JB.

Jelly Bean is a more efficient firmware than Ginger Bread.
There is no need to worry about that notifications on start up.
As in fact the phone starts faster than before.

I don't have my external SD card in my phone at the moment and now when my phone is near the end of booting up I only see the preparing USB storage message at the top of the screen, why isn't it reading the internal SD card? or is that what the USB storage is?
