HAHA lol apologies - I thought I bought myself GS3 with unbranded firmware. I actually have vodafone firmware....bit embarrassing. <walks away sheepishly..>
It's actually quite bloat free even with ICS. That's why I didn't realise it was branded. Couple of apps I disabled. Apart from that there are no voda startup or shutdown screens.

Well all I can tell you is that a notification appeared on my phones software update icon which I had put on my screen to make daily checks easier as a letter 'N'. I tried to update OTA but kept getting the message about the update being available in the order it was requested or similar. So connected to kies on my pc and it stated that a software update was available and hey ho it was 4.1.1.
Ok, just looked at you mobile and certain areas of France have the update, so if my phone originates from there, that is why I have the update. Got the phone from Carphone warehouse and am on tmobile/orange/EE.
I think I got the shortcut for the daily update status by using the barcode scanner on you mobiles home page. Will check for you.
Correction! To add a shortcut to your home screen,
Navigate to required web page
Tap the star in the top right corner
This brings up ' add bookmark'
Tap the
This asks you to name it and choose a location ( home)
Then tap 'save' top right
You then close and go to menu
Add apps and widgets
Tap and hold the bookmark you have just saved and add it to your home screen
