Jerky Scrolling

Sometimes when scrolling up or down on a web page the response is jerky as if there's a resistance. If I return to e.g. home page scrolling action flies up and down smoothly in the normal way. Any other users notice this and what's the cause?

I would bet the browser either loaded something complicated or something went wrong when compiling the page. Nothing is ever going to be 100% smooth either. You could clear data on your browser to see if that helps.

Do you mean clear cache? I've never understood what that's supposed to do and read somewhere that clearing the cache is bad. But what the hell, I'll try it if the problem worsens. Thanks.

If you go to Applications in settings and find your browser you can uninstall, clear data, and clear cache. I would clear both data and cache.

Thats the browser, and it is a byproduct of multi-tasking. In Android, when you scroll up and down, the browser continues to load the page as you do it. In iOS, the page stops loading when it detects movement, because the UI is always given priority.

So in Android it's normal. I don't think there is a way to change it. It's an OS-level thing.

It's not related to processor speed, then? The 5 is pretty nifty in that respect. Also perhaps RAM capacity comes into it.

Usually yes but sometimes it builds it incorrectly and needs a reset.

Also, the Nexus 5 handles multitasking just fine. If multitasking was to blame the RAM would be full or the CPU would be running at full tilt. Neither should happen while doing a simple task like browsing. Usually when I use Chrome only two of four cores are active at any point. It usually is also at a lower frequency. I very rarely have issues with jerky scrolling. In fact, my iPad 4 is more prone to jerky scrolling than my Nexus 5 on Chrome or Safari.

Edit - I read Jeff Denvers post incorrectly. This is true, but should rarely give noticeable jerkiness.

No. The jerkiness is caused by additional content being inserted into the page in real time as you're scrolling. The content is not linear...web pages load it in different places. So if you are halfway down the page and something is inserted into the top, everything will be pushed down and it will look jerky. The PC web Browsers work the same way.

iOS solves that by just freezing everything whenever it detects movement. The webpage loads slower, but the scrolling is kept completley smooth.

I don't think one way is necessary superior to the other. They both have trade offs. I personally prefer Android's way. I'd rather have it load faster and just deal with the jerkiness.

Had this thing for 6 months and I can confidently say that unless something is wrong or screwy, if an app is jerky, it's the fault of the app, not the Nexus 5. Chrome is a bit of a beast, resource wise.... it's doing a TON of stuff in the background and I've never really seen it be all that smooth. Of all the apps you have loaded on your phone, Chrome is probably the closest to a desktop application (size/complexity/requirements,etc)...

Now, once you start seeing it go all herky-jerky on the home screen, then something's up (run-away process, etc).

The only time I get jerky scrolling is when the phone is on my wireless charger. Totally usable but the wireless charger definitely affects it for me.
