Scanning is not working. I also received an invite, but it would not let me accept it. I tried uninstalling the app, but the invite is now gone.

Are there known issues on BBM with a Nexus 5?

I'm wondering if it's an issue with BBM because I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with the 4.3 OS and I have the exactly the same problem with joining this Official Android Central BBM Group. Can anyone shine some light as to why we're having this issue joining this group?

Yes...
Limits exist in BlackBerry? Messenger for the number of allowable Contacts, Messenger Groups, and Members in a Group. These limits are as follows:

Maximum # of BlackBerry Messenger Contacts = 2000
Maximum # of BlackBerry Messenger Groups = 30
Maximum # of Members in a BlackBerry Messenger Group = 30 *
* Note: when adding members to a BlackBerry Messenger Group, the UI displays the Group Capacity as #/30

Okay, then can someone currently in the group confirm whether the group has 30 members?

If so, that explains why I can't join, and opens a need for a second official group
