Just a quick question about rooting...

Hey all, new to the forums here but it seems like a great community, so I figured it would be a good place to ask a quick noobie question about rooting my S3. If I root my phone using Odin, as described in the sticky at the top of the forum, do I have to utilize a custom ROM, or can I just leave the phone as is? Really the only reason I want to root the phone is to remove some of the bloatware and download a few apps like WifiKill and whatnot, so I'm not really too interested in custom ROMs, at least right now. Thanks for your help!

If you want to root ,you don't have to change anything at all. I'm rooted and I haven't migrated from touchwiz yet

Alright thanks, that's pretty much the exact answer I was looking for. So TouchWiz is a ROM in itself, it's just the default ROM?

Touchwiz can be looked at in multiple ways. Technically, I think Samsung would say Touchwiz is the UI that they've built on top of stock Android. But there are also a number of other enhancements (although some would argue with that choice of word) that Samsung has integrated into Android that aren't really part of the UI. People tend to refer to the entire Samsung suite of enhancements as Touchwiz.

But rather than saying Touchwiz is a ROM, I'd probably say that the stock Samsung ROM includes Touchwiz.

And if I ever wanted to "unroot" my phone, I would basically be flashing the Touchwiz ROM/UI back onto the phone, correct? Sorry for these noobish questions, I've just recently gotten pretty interested in rooting, and I've been reading a lot of articles which have left me with more questions than answers.

Actually if you're not planning on changing from stock than you wouldn't have to flash anything.

Rooting is simply unlocking your phone so you have more accessibility. To unroot is to relock

If later you decide to flash an alternative rom, you'd first backup your current one so you can return to it at a later date

But if he ever wanted to unroot he would have to reset the flash counter using triangle away and flash a stock rom.

Flash counter shows how many times you've flashed your phone. Basically indicating that your phone is /was rooted

The app he's referencing resets that counter to 0

Ahhhh I know what you're talking about, I saw it on the Play Store earlier today... So in conclusion, to unroot I would need to flash the stock ROM?
