Just asked my carrier about 4.2 for the HTC One and this was there reply...

Well it launched with 4.1.2 and everyone who bought it (myself included) knew that going in, knows that HTC has a bad reputation for updates and the US carriers like to screw things up along the way. As for getting 4.3 in a few months, ok great, but I will have GPe 4.3 long before Sense 4.3 and I will live with that.

You didn't answer the question.....

So I can only assume that getting 4.2.2 is nothing more than a status symbol in Android for you. Our phones run amazing. And 4.2.2 doesn't add anything ground breaking. So what's the point in stressing over it...other than to say you have it?

Some things lag. Like playing a HD video in the YT app and scrolling threw comments or checking notification screen. It lags pretty bad.

I finally got tired of waiting and I rooted and flashed Android Revolution HD and I'm really happy with the experience so far. I finally have lock screen notifications through NiLS, got rid of the black bar in older apps, no AT&T bloatware, and a bunch of other improvements. The root/flash process was pretty painless even from a Mac, and so far it is rock solid (knock on wood). I did forget to back up my Zooper Widget templates, and I lost a couple of pictures that I thought Google should have had, but otherwise no issues. I can definitely see that it's not for the faint of heart, but as long as you do your research and make sure you follow directions, it doesn't seem to be that hard (that being said, I do have 20 years of IT, QA, and technical support experience, so take that with a grain of salt).

I disagree with the update part! We have already had 2 updates!

Can you root the phone and upgrade to 4.2.2 but still have Sense5? I kinda like it

You can root and then install the ARHD 12.1 Rom over on xda. That gives you 4.2.2 with sense. It's a great Rom, installed it first day I got the One and have had zero issues with it.

Can you install on the DE without root? If not, does the rom install enable root or does this require a separate process? I thought one advantage of the unlocked bootloader DE was to be able to run roms w/o root.
