Just called Google

I've been having Bluetooth issues with my phone, same with call quality, I gave Google a call about replacing my nexus 6, I was told the phone replacement would be a refurbished phone. So now I'll have to return it since I'm in my 2 weeks return policy and rebuy it either from T-Mobile or from the play store when it becomes available again.

Isn't that something? They out me through the loop of returning and rebuying the phone rather than just giving me a new one right away. I'm honestly thinking of just returning it and waiting for a better close to pure android phone to come out.

don't you have to pay restocking fee and shipping again?

This seems like quite a bit disappointing.

Google was practically giving free Nexus 5s away in their replacement program recently, where even the most badly battered phones we're replaced.

If they could afford to do that, the least they could have done would be to have given someone a replacement for his $600 - $700 Nexus device.

When I had to replace my nexus 4 within the first 2 weeks it was free shipping and no restocking fee.

IMO I would accept their refurbished unit and call it a day. Not worth the hassle of doing it any other way, and chances are they will send you a brand new unit. Think about it for a second. Do you seriously think they have refurbished units laying around of a device that has only been on sale for 2 weeks?

My question when they offer the refurbs is warranty. You go from a 1 year to a 90 day with at&t.

What were using before?

The "refurb" line is standard practice -- it's in every industry.

When you're using something this new in limited supply, 99 times out of 100 you will get a brand new phone anyway. There's nothing to refurb, and manufacturers and phone companies typically maintain an allocation of devices specifically for this purpose.

When refurbs are actually sent, it's not like they give you a phone with scratches and dents all over it. It will effectively be a new phone... and in some ways better because it goes through a second round of quality check prior to being shipped off, with parts replaced as needed to keep it cosmetically new.

People get upset when things don't work, but the mentality of "I expect a new one" is the wrong way to look at it. The expectation should be that the manufacturer will fix it. If you happen to get something factory sealed and new, consider yourself lucky.

Why not just get it exchanged from T-Mobile if you are within the 14 days? I had my N6 exchanged for a loud vibration motor, replacement doesn't have the issue.

If he called Google regarding the phone and Google indicated how they would be able to replace it, it was purchased from Google. If it had been purchased through T-Mobile, he'd have to go through them or Motorola - Google doesn't provide warranty service for devices not directly purchased from the Play store.

Ah, I thought the OP purchased from T-Mobile.

a refurbished phone isn't really a bad deal... It's going to look brand new anyway and whatever was wrong has been fixed/replaced... if there is a common defect amount new units you might just get another "Bad" one right out the box new....

but then again I am a big fan of open boxed items at the store.. but that is usually at a good discount off new... so not really a fair comparison... You paid for a new device and it's only a week or so old so a new replacement would seem like a given.... but I'd just take the refurbished and call it a day.. It's still a darn hard device to come by as is... and as others have mentioned how "Used" can it really be???

Well anytime you get a replacement it usually is a refurb so not sure what the issue is.

Good points on refurbished phone. I've bought refurbished stuff off of Ebay and it's always looked brand new. The only difference is the packaging was not the same as the original, but was packaged nicely.

Another thing to remember is that when your phone goes in for warranty, it is not a new phone. Therefore you should not expect a new phone in return. In my mind the exception to this would be when your phone is malfunctioning right out of the box, which yours probably was since the Nexus 6 hasn't been out for very long yet.

You guys are missing the point here, I would go for a refurbished phone if I was out of my 2 weeks policy. But due to being in my 2 weeks policy, why would I settle for a refurbished when I can clearly return it and rebuy it? They should of made it easier for a long time customer and just give me a new exchange rather than a refurbished.

Everyone has their own preference! Can't tell if that post was sarcastic or serious? A refurbished device would go through enough checks that I doubt they'd send you a water logged toilet phone........ if my phone was less than two weeks old I'd probably return and buy a new one......

Whoever you buy from determines the return policy. Evidently with Google it;s "you can return it for a refund within 2 weeks, but a replacement will be a refurb", whereas if you had bought it from TMobil (or Best Buy or somewhere else), the policy might be "replace with a new one within 2 weeks". It's their store, so they make the rules. Unless the written warranty says "replace with a new unit within 2 weeks", they have the right to replace it with a refurb even if it's hours after you got it.
