Just curious...anyone know why Google Voice can't send MMS?

All of my traffic except my voice mail. Rest of traffic going through Google voice.

I can count on one hand the number of MMS pictures I've received in 3-1/2 years of having a smartphone and what happens tonight but my cousin trying to send me one. I got the symbol that there was an attachment, but nothing happened. She doesn't have a smartphone, just some VM feature phone thing with limited minutes and unlimited texts. Oh well.

Sorry to bump an old thread but Send It Pro has just been updated to allow sending any file on your phone to anyone using your Google Voice number.. effectively allowing MMS via Google Voice. And due to the nature of how it works it throws MMS incompatibility issues (and charges) right out the windows :-)

Sending and receiving or just sending?

Just sending.. receiving only forwards to your Gmail if their on Sprint, completely out of my hands..

Unless of course that person sends via Send It :P in which case you get an sms with a link to the file

Ah, that sucks... Great at least on the sending side... This is the 1 thing that is prohibiting me from using GV :( I get too many MMS pics from my wife/family to not be able to see/save. And most use an iPhone, so this app won't help them :)

Oh wells.. someday perhaps Google will get this right!

actually, when GV tells you in a text that you've received an mms.go to your gmail and you will find an email with the picture attatched! but you cant send one though. :/

Only if the sender is on Sprint.

Lack of MMS makes it unusable? Why is that? I've been using google voice for a while and I don't miss picture messaging. If they need to send a picture they just email it. Big deal? I prefer free texting over anything. Google voice is super convenient too.

Friday night my boss texted me a picture of an error message - to my Google Voice Number which is the ONLY NUMBER I GIVE PEOPLE. I didn't get it. I now come to find out I CAN'T get it. My daughter has a dedicated texting phone, with NO DATA PLAN. Now I know why I haven't been getting her messages. Yes, out here in the REAL WORLD there are VALID reasons to need MMS on Google Voice.

Absolutely Agree with ^^^. I totally feel your pain.

I'm a longtime GV user, that's the only number I give out.

But there have been many occasions where I later discovered that I didn't get an important Apple Group Message or MMS due to GVs incompatibility.

I'm sure for every missed message that I learn about, there are 10 others that I never know I missed.

I still believe that in my situation*, the greatness of GVs benefits still outweigh the cons, but this is probably the biggest of those cons, and is a pretty big deal.

*I'm a busy IT consultant, and use SMS to communicate with any of hundreds of contacts (employees/customers/colleagues) every day. GV allows me to quickly and easily do this from my laptop, tablet, or phone, and I can easily search those messages years later. There is no practical way to train my contacts to avoid taboo message types.

Don't even get me started on the greatness of GV; a permanent phone number, VM transcription, phone forwarding, and marking spam callers. If GV ever starts charging (I hope they do, so GV doesn't go the way of Reader), I'm in at almost any cost. The service is priceless.

MMS uses data. Data cost money. SMS doesn't use data. I use GV for an additional number that I have forwarded to my cell number. This way, I don't have to give out my cell number to anyone I don't want to. An added bonus is that I can also text with that number and all this doesn't cost me anything additional. Taking calls does use your mobile minutes. This is easily implemented because the call does not start until it is forwarded and you answer it on your phone. Even with a data plan from your carrier, it would be hard to accomplish this with MMS because there would need to be a way to move data on the GV side.

All you have to do is enable text messaging to go to your email, and MMS will be able to be received there... now the other part, send, yeah...I dont want to pay for Send It Pro... need a free version

Just a lil curious on this...
I can receive pictures just fine, but I cannot send pictures. Any idea why this is going on?
