Just got my evo replaced through sprint, now back to 2.1 and i wanna root!

Peripherally related. Can I safely rename the folders from doing a nandroid backup? I've got a whole series all with similar names (same date, different times) and it'd be a lot easier to manage if they had more descriptive names like "rooted stock android, no apps" or "AC ROM apps restored with settings".

Yes. I have renamed with no problems. When you go into ROM manager and click on manage and restore backups it will pull up a list of your backups. If you click on it it'll give you the option to rename, delete, or restore.

clockwork or ra for recovery?

I use clockwork 98% of the time. Some people say that RA does a better job of wiping the cache, so when I have flashing problems sometimes I will flash RA just to wipe the cache and flash the rom, then flash clockwork back to make the backup.

So far so good, the root went good, backed up in recovery, Now im loading baked snack.

now whenever i wanna switch to another rom, can i just flash it through recovery, or do i have to wipe, then load?

Ok well i loaded the latest radio as well...

dont know if it was needed but i did anyways.

my question is, my 3g speeds via xtreme labs speed test are rather slow, i dont know if it has to do with the flash or what?

even my internet browsing is slow, im not too happy with that...

im wiping as we speak and going to use AC and see how i like it... see if it improves the speeds...

You would want to backup your current ROM, wipe, then load.

Did you do a speed test before and after the radio flash to confirm the drop in speed?

i didnt back up anything lol, i just wiped and flashed.

Yes, i figured the new radio would do the job, the speed was very laggy and noticeable even during normal browsing.

the fastest the test got before and after the radio update were the same, the highest was 300kbs or something like that, NOW with AC its over 1,000 easy...

im unsure why..

so more about the back up, i can back up with nandroid and that does what? back up all apps and data OR does it back up the entire system with everything in it?

Doing a NAND backup (whether it's through recovery or ROM manager) is like taking a ghost image of your hard drive. What I do when I want to try a ROM is make a backup of my current set up, that way if I don't like the other ROM I can flash my backup and get right back to where I was before.

Great, thanks,

what i use for my personal data is My backup pro, works great for restoring things.

what roms do you personally recommend and use?

I use and whole heartedly recommend the AC Rom. It's really stable and I have no issues with it. I get great battery life. Others that I've heard are good are toasted delight and baked snack. If you don't like Sense you can try Cyanogen Mod 6.

There are a ton out there and I would encourage you to try any that look good to you. Just make sure you follow the devs instructions when you flash it.
