Was it an official Samsung case, or from a 3rd party? Smartcover cases typically use a small embedded magnet in the cover that activates the smartcover sensor on the phone (typically somewhere on the bezel). If it's a 3rd party case, they might not have embedded a magnet -- are you certain this is supposed to act like an S View case? If they advertised it as working like an S View case, then it's possible they forgot the magnet, placed it in the wrong location, or used a magnet that's too weak.

Some of the third party cases need an app by their manufacturer installed. Often there are QR codes on the box or manual to direct the phone to this app.
