i know enough about flashing or roms to make myself dangerous. the only thing i am looking to do to my phone is get free wireless tethering (done) and improve battery life. would i install a kernel like Netarchy 4.3.2 CFS to get this?

Netarchy is very popular. The kernel you mentioned can help improve you battery life. Best way to know is to try it out. Do a nandroid (backup) and flash it. Remember to wipe cache and dalvik cache first.

Why I say try to see if it improves for you is because every phone acts different to some kernels. Some better with CFS vs. BFS, HAVS vs. noHAVS and so on.

Once rooted, you should be able to install the wireless tether app, no matter which kernel you're using.

There's a relatively new app out there called Kernel Manager that is really slick. It provides access to and allows you to flash a number of kernels directly from the app. It includes all of the different flavors of the latest Netarchy kernel. There are some great wikis out there that explain the various terms used to describe the kernels.

The most common advice you'll see is to try a kernel and use it for a few days and see if it suits the way you use your phone.

I really like the combination of the Eternal Prophecy ROM and the included 4.3.4-cfs-have-more-sbc kernel. The ONLY problem you might have with that ROM is that the dev puts out new versions more often than some people change underwear :D

Also some kernels do not work on some roms. If you use, (which I doubt since you just want wireless tether) any of the new GB roms, some kernels break the camera and actually hinder battery life. There are no GB kernels yet.
