K-9 mail

I installed K-9 e-mail today (version 2512), and I cannot get it to sound a notification tone when mail is received, nor will it show new e-mail in the notification bar. Is this a common problem?
I have read that certain versions work better than others. Is this true?
BTW, I am using it for POP3 accounts.

I haven't had any problems with mine. I love the fact that you can put a signature line in your emails through k-9. That's the main reason I got it.
