K9 Polling On Captivate

Will someone explain to me POLLING on K9 program?
My normal gmail doesn't want to cooperate with this phone. Its days behind, it never updates & yea the SYNC is on. So I installed K-9, it says polling is off, don't I need that on?
I am not sure how to turn it on, I mean theres no menus/settings etc with this program, all I see when I click on it is:
unified inbox
all messages
my name
thats it, so what am I doing wrong? thanks. Love this phone, but everything appears overwhelming.

In K9 polling can bet set at different intervals for each account. So, to set it go into you account. Hit the menu button on the phone (bottom, far left). Select more. Select Settings. Select Account Settings. Select Fetching Mail. Select Folder Poll Frequency. Make your selection.
