Kali acting up

After apt-get upgrade kali will go back to sign-in window whenever I open a terminal and restart if I plug in a usb stick. At first I was getting a black screen asking for password , which I gave , only to boot to sign-in page again. I have been researching linux for the best mobile forensics distro. I basically deal with Android so a lot of good tools in Kali a never use. Like trimming your rose garden with a broad sword...too much. So I am downloading the iso for Santoku . I use it before I switch to Kali so I am familiar with it. It may be my hardware is getting outdated. I use a 2012 HP elitebook 8560w to run my linux distro. I can run VM right out the box a most drivers for different smart phones pre-install.
