Nexus is my first android phone which I got on release. So far its a great phone. I want to unlock and root the phone but would really prefer to not lose my data. All the research I do seems that when you unlock the phone the data is wiped, is there anyway around this? I've heard of Titanium backup, but believe you have to be rooted to use (so defeats my purpose).

Thats correct you will loose data when you unlock and root your phone. It wipes your phone clean.
Again correct you need root to use Titanium Backup.
My Backup(ones version's free) in the market will back up somethings but not app data unless your rooted.I havent used My Backup in awhile but I think the free version will still back up sms messages ,pictures, etc. My backup link description below

There is no way to avoid losing your data when you unlock (it's a one time thing). Thereafter, wiping your phone to flash ROMs does NOT wipe stuff like your pictures/music/etc... Before you unlock, just copy anything you want saved to your PC, then copy it back afterwards.
