Keeping my V20, don't think I'm upgrading this year

I just got a pixel 2 during Verizon's black Friday promo.

As much as I like the V20, I just can't get over the fact that there are no official updates/security patches for the US996 model. I mean there are two major security issues with blue borne and the wifi krack. For me to nullify my warranty and download the us cellular updates is just absurd.

Image retention, battery life woes and OS sluggishness from the phone will not be missed. I will, however, miss the DAC and manual controls for the camera, but I will trade those in for pixel 2's better cameras, security updates, OS updates, clean Android, and other features.

I'll be putting my V20 up for sale.

The fact that there is even remotely this much for the consumer to worry about only proves that this market is broken.

Enjoy the Pixel 2. You probably want a screen protector, a co-worker showed me his brand new Pixel 2 XL and that thing looked scratched up, the screen looks like it's made of cheap quality. Also, be careful not to bend it, it'll bend very easily and crack. It feels more like plastic than metal actually.

Just to let you know, nearly all US unlocked versions of any phone never get any updates. Honestly, any updates wouldn't have change anything really, maybe a security patch but how often do people hack into your phone? You can install an anti virus app, it's always updated. The image retention is temporary, but on the AMOLED screen you'll get permanent screen burn in from the keyboard after a year. You gotta learn how to optimize your phone, truthfully the V20 is the most battery efficient phone I've ever used, seriously beats the Galaxy Active series by a long shot, which actually has a bigger battery (4000 mAh). Not only will you miss the DAC, you will miss the convenience of a headphone port and micro SD slot, which will increase the usability over a period of time as you can still use it as an awesome media player in the future.

I'm just tired of the whole shebang of loosing features like the removable battery and a glass back and (IMHO) stupid curved screens.

It's not that I am asking for much in just for LG to reintroduce the v10 body with upgraded internals... Heck they can go 1 step further and utilize the entire screen real-estate and keep it 16x9 and bump up to 120 refresh rate like the razer phone and have the best LCD screen available. Add in their camera, top of the line audio, fm radio enabled chipset with a removable battery and I would even go back to Verizon to get it...

Mac

A new V10 would be amazing

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Phones are 'supposed' to have 2 year support cycles anyway, and the v20 just hit over 1 year.

"Supposed to" because the way they are designed, they only last for 2-3 years max before they die (Note 4 is a perfect example). Usually the battery dies first. They are doing that with TVs now, my Samsung TV I bought new in 2015 died in 2017. What's strange is laptops lasts longer although it has more complicated components.

I have a Galaxy S3 running in good condition, as well as a 3 year old Tab 4 that I am still using as my tablet because all I do on it is read ebooks and watch Netflix. All my devices are all Samsung and have kept working far beyond just 2 years. The only times my devices have stopped working was due to physical damage (I year old Note 2 got wet, 5 year old S3 mini fell on an awkward position and the power button got jammed and need a replacement).

And it's not strange that laptops last longer. The components are bigger, designed to better take high temps, and fan cooled.

I have the pixel 2 not XL. Jerry rig everything shows that this screen scratches at level 6 just like any other phone. The phone is in a case so I'm good there.

Unlocked phones rarely get updates? Really? You must mean Android only then because I know iPhones will get their updates. Oh wait, pixel will as well.

Updates won't change anything? I shouldn't have to worry about someone hacking my phone because "how often do people hack your phones?". You're kidding me right? Why would companies push out updates then if that kind of mindset was ideal?

Gotta learn how to optimize my phone? Trust me I do. It's not that efficient. Check the forums. There are plenty of posts on how to get more battery life since they only get 3 or so SOT hours.

Listen, I understand you love your phone. But, the fanboy glasses need to be removed.

Unlocked phone don't get updates (unless Apple or Pixel obviously). That's really how it is, you gotta buy a carrier version of you want updates (and FM Radio). Fanboy or not, Pixel phones has their short comings. There's a lot of better choices out there like the OnePlus 5T, nearly half the cost and still has the headphone jack. Honestly if you go in the Nexus 6P forums, you'll see nothing but people complaining about problems after 2 years (mostly battery problems), updates wouldn't have done anything. It comes down to is it worth it to get updates or have a headphone jack and micro SD and/or a lower cost phone. Your battery might be great now but after the honeymoon phase you're going to struggle with it, especially without the battery being removable or upgraded like the V20 which you can buy an extended battery that'll solve any battery problem.
