Kernels and roms 101?

Could somebody please give me a basic understanding of what a kernel is and how it associates to a rom? Or could you point me to a place that can explain it to me?

What I did to refresh or to get a better understanding was a simple Google of the subject.

Android & Windows Phone: Tablets, Apps, & ROMs @ xda-developers has moutains of knowledge and info great site to comb thru and read.

BTW an individual can spend hours reading from this website, I found it very informative, also can be like putting your face to fire hydrant of knowledge...LOL
