do i have to have a custom ROM to have a kernel? everything ive been reading is too damn confusing. i thought i wanted a kernel. at first i thought the kernel was the radio. now i see some of you have your sigs that say kernel #xxx and radio #xxx. so i assume there different. i cant find a single article about the radios. if i want s-off i gotta load unrevoked forever. but if i wanna switch it i gotta load s-on. none of this rooting stuff is seeming worth it to me. why would i want a ROM? i like the phone the way it is. why would I want my phone to look like a Motorola? am i missing something here? cause im ready to unroot. i guess im just not a rooting person

ok, i just went into the .... recovery screen..? holding vol down while powering. and up top it says s-off!?!? how did that happen when i never loaded unrevoked forever?

The kernels effect a lot of things like processing speeds, whether or not you can overclock you're processor, and even charging and battery voltage output. I am by no means an expert or programmer I have just messed around with kernels... Some of them greatly help battery life like KingXKernel Kingy fresh #4. Also no you do not need a custom ROM for a Kernel.

If you rooted using the new Unrevoked 3.2.1 build, then thats how you got the s-off. s-off was built into the latest unrevoked.

It seems like rooting with the latest unrevoked is simple. So after I do that, I do a backup from within the recovery menu right, then install a kernel?

Battery life is my main concern so how does KingXKernel Kingy fresh #4 increase that? Thanks!

^ great questions. all i can find is this Hydra Kernels - FAQ and im not techy enough to decode the terms haha. my only other question is the "radio" what is it and what does it control? signal strength? i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774155 and i assume you dont need a ROM for a radio either?

Also no you do not need a custom ROM for a Kernel.
