Keyboard won't open / Google Tap to Talk won't close

Hi - Just installed the recent android update on my husband's phone. Since then, he can't type anything. When you tap the text box, the Google Tap to Talk automatically opens and can't be closed. Hitting the top right hand X does nothing.

The phone is a Moto G5 Plus.

Thanks for any help you can offer. FYI - I'm not terribly tech savvy (he is even worse!) so please be patient!
