Hi guys

I got the OTA prompt on Friday night to install Android 4.4 on my Nexus 4 16GB

Was plugged in and about 50% battery at the time so allowed it to install
All seemed to go OK
However, when I tried to use my phone again, I got an error message saying "com.android.vending" has stopped working
I clicked report and duly sent off the msg to Google
However it popped up again several times.....and then I spotted my Play Store icon had turned into an Android-bot icon

Tried several things, including a complete reset to factory settings (sob sob - there goes hours for the re-installing!)

I even downloaded the Google Play Store apk and installed - seemed to work for a short while, but suddenly stopped again on sunday.
I did a re-boot just to check and now every re-boot I get "Android is updating...." and it says checking apps" for a few seconds

Now back to several com.android.vending has stopped messages and no Play Store again.
Can't re-install the Play Store as before either now!

Any help for a fairly inexperienced Android user would be much appreciated - I've done a fair bit of searching and can't find a single mention of this same issue anywhere!

Thanks
Liam

The first thing to do is to try booting into recovery and wiping cache.

But if it were me, I would just flash a new factory image and wipe the cache partition in fastboot. Is your bootloader unlocked?

Welcome to Android Central. I would suggest taking it a step further and do a complete factory reset, wipe cache then boot to see how things go. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes you'll get error messages like this when receiving a major OS upgrade.

If you can access system settings > security via the menu options then perform a factory reset.

Here is some useful information from the Google help page:

1.Go to Settings > Backup & reset.
2.Touch Factory data reset.
3.Touch Reset phone.
4.If your phone is password protected, you'll be prompted to enter your Pattern, PIN, or Password.
5.Touch Erase everything to confirm.

Alternatively, follow these steps:
1.If your phone is on, power it off.
2.Press and hold Volume Down, and then press and hold Power simultaneously until the device turns on. You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
3.Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
4.Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
5.While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
6.Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
7.Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.

Note: If at any point during the above steps your phone becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.

Just tried the recovery mode - wipe cache: No luck with this!

Bootloader is not unlocked - I've left it the phone stock since I've had it.
I've had a quick read up on installing a factory or ota image of 4.4
I guess that's my only option now - must do some reading to prepare!

thanks

Thank you - I did a factory reset over the weekend with no luck
As CoolBeit said, looks like a re-install

Any simple guides I can follow?

Thanks again

Or you could use wugfresh's toolkit. It saved my bacon yesterday when I softbricked my n4 sideloading the update. Followed immediately by a donation. :D

Thanking you....and Mr Wug
That was much easier (if a bit long) than I expected, but all is looking OK now.
Why oh why did it have to be so hard.
Would love to know why this happened!!

Glad it's working now.. Just curious, did you clear Google services framework to force the update?

This is why it's great to have a nexus. You can always flash the factory image when things go wrong. An ota always has the potential to cause these types of problems. Glad you got it working!
