I received the update this morning and downloaded. However, when it tries to install, it errors out, saying there was a problem.
Do I need to unroot before running this install?
If so, can someone point me to what I need please?

Yes. Unroot first. What did you use to get root? Saferoot has an unroot function.

AC App on SGS3

I now have a message stating that the wrong software was detected and that I should return my phone to the store.

Same thing here. unrooted and it says send to store. Guess I'm not on stock rom?

Update: Eventually got it fixed.

I installed a stock Rom via Odin. Them updated via OTA.

Exactly the right thing to do when you want to take an update and your phone is rooted, and you don't care about having a permanently locked bootloader.. This works if you're rooted, if you're using a custom ROM, whatever. Good solution. After that, if you want to root your phone, you can use towelroot:

I'm throwing a party and you should come **GS5 ROOT THREAD** - xda-developers

On the other hand, if you are rooted and have an unlocked bootloader, you might want to wait for a nice custom ROM version of the update, like maybe CleanROM 9 (have my fingers crossed) before updating.
