Should I be going for a smartphone that comes with Kitkat operating system rather than one with Jellybean then manually upgrading?

That is a subjective question. Many would argue that a pre-installed version is better but each has an advantage and disadvantage. What I would do is if there is a device that you like research what people are saying before you commit, and maybe look a little more closely at devices that come without the update. Often people who do the OTA updates will have stories about what was better or worse before and after the update. That could actually make you like a device that comes without and then decide not to update. It happens, I've seen it. Of course pre-installed you should be running right out of the box, but whatever isn't right may still be waiting for a patch or something. Since you are asking about OS one advantage to pre-installed is that if you get a device with the or almost the highest OS you'll probably get at least one more OS update while you own the device. However devices that update may be dropped from future updates before you are ready to move on to the next device. In the end though what really matters is the device. Is it going to be something that you really enjoy.

Good luck

Since I started this thread I now have KitKat 4.4.4 and I haven't had a speed issue, it will be upgradable to Lollipop apparently but I think I'll stay with Kitkat.
