L needs a dark theme

New generation of AMOLED displayed are better in every single respect than LCD. Better colors, better contrast, better viewing angles, much less energy usage, more vibrant and they don't have burn in issues.

... okay. I don't get why people get so up in arms over whatever they can think of to argue about. I've had more phones than anyone I've ever met and couldn't tell you which were ISP, AMOLED or CRT. But back to the purpose of this thread...
I agree, I wish they would allow the option to choose between a light or dark theme across Android. I hate the look of the blinding white EVERYTHING.

This is no surprise but more reason to have black themes available. Also black theme is also much easier to read at night. Seeing how Nexus 6 is using AMOLED, I hope google considers a black theme. BlackBerry is doing a good job offering options to choose light or dark themes for apps; this needs to be a trend.

How much power does a black interface really save on AMOLED displays? | Greenbot

Power consumption was 41% lower overall when using the predominantly black interface in Reddit Sync.

Your actual savings will depend greatly on how much screen time you have and which apps you use, but eking out an extra 15 or 20% screen time seems quite plausible.

I would also like to see an option.

If not other colors a basic Black/White should be there.. Lollipop is just too Bright.

While I'm happy with the new clean white theme, I do agree an option to switch between dark/light (similar to Windows phone) would definitely be a nice option.

For sure? I have not seen this mentioned anywhere

Yeah, these are screenshots of the official Google Keyboard on Android L. The "material light" and "material dark" themes.

Yes please the only thing I like about L so far is the greatly improved recent apps functions.

I prefer darker metal themes they look clean, crisp and elegant.

Interesting, but thats only the keyboard...are we sure the whole OS design can change between Material Light/Dark? If so thats awesome

Agreed!
yet Google probably could give options to those who want dark themes.

This. Even if it looks "dated" to some but yes the option should be available, especially when we consider android the OS of customization and flexibility. It would be nice if they even went a step further and offered Custom Material Color (mix two sets of colors to make a unique experience for each user).

Agree. L is too bright... i prefer the dark theme. One of the many reasons i've avoided upgrading to v5.0 and again avoiding the upgrade to v5.0.1. But there is hope: i've heard that Google is bringing back the dark theme in either 5.0.x or 5.1. Ideally, making this configurable would be the best option.

I've read a post talking about the "Material" (ie. Dark) and "Material.Light (White) themes, however, as far as i know, these are developers' options for use while developing new Apps. But as far as i know (i could be wrong) these themes are not configurable by the user.

Google Keyboard has light and dark Material themes.

I for one think white themes looks gaudy and pretentious on a phone and black themes look slicker and easier on the eyes. Just make a setting, call it Kit Kat theme, or something but get my setting menu back in black.

Yeah i agree - a bit like the options on Windows 8 where you choose a main and secondary colour.
